In accordance with Section 8(1)(b) of the Malaysian Media Council Act 2025 the government has named Director-General of the Department of Broadcasting Malaysia (RTM), Datuk Suhaimi bin Sulaiman, and the Chief Executive Officer of the Malaysian National News Agency (BERNAMA), Datin Paduka Nur-ul Afida Kamaludin, as Government representatives on the Board of the Malaysian Media Council.

The nominations were made by Communications Minister, Datuk Fahmi Fadzil on Jan 14.

The Malaysian Media Council board welcomes the nominations. Suhaimi has extensive experience in broadcasting and journalism, including leadership roles within the private and public sector media. Nur-ul Afida has experience in managing a national news organisation and media administration, with long-standing involvement in the country’s mainstream media ecosystem.

With the nomination and appointment of the government representatives, 20 out of 21 board positions have been filled. The remaining board position is that of Chairperson, with nominations for the position currently open.

Besides the two government representatives, the Board has four members representing media companies, four representing media practitioners, and four representing public interests, including academics and civil society. A further six Board members were appointed in accordance with Section 8(1)(f) of the Act to ensure equal representation, covering the aspect of gender, locality, and diversity of media by the languages and formats.

The Council’s board was elected in November 2025 and shall serve a two year term. The Council is currently awaiting funds from the government in order to establish a fully functioning secretariat and to meet its mandate.
